Yeah, I've liked jazz ever since being in the jazz ensemble in high school. One of the things that was drilled into our heads was that to understand how to play the music, you have to listen to the music. However, even though it's been six years since I've graduated, I still use jazz as a great relaxer.

As far as the albums you've mentioned, I have a copy of Kind of Blue somewhere around here, but I haven't listened to any of the others you've mentioned; I'll have to find them in the underground ;)

Thanks! :)

Also, I agree that Duke at Newport is pretty essential. :)

Cugat

Funny, I never had you pegged as a jazz fan. For me, he essentials are Miles' Kind of Blue, Mulligan & Baker, Count Basie & Duke Ellington's First Time, Dizzy & Charlie Parker's Town Hall 1945, Sonny Stitt's complete catalogue. Those are the ones I have probably listened to the most and can't really "hear" as much anymore. But I always feel happy listening to Satch Plays Fats, and almost anything by Louie post-1938 or so and pre-1955-ish.

And not for nothin', jazz kind of died when Miles did that space-fusion thing in the 70s (and a little bit of all of us died then too). I'm just stuck in the 40s-60s small groups jazz records.
